Medak's Summer Camp in Medak District

Pratham in collaboration with UNICEF (Andhra Pradesh) and the NGO Medvan is anchoring the intervention of Summer Camp in Medak District of Andhra Pradesh. In total the intervention of Summer Camp of Pratham will be introduced in 18 Mandals of the district that amount to it being implemented in approximately 1000 villages of Medak. Pratham for the task of efficiently bringing about an impact through its Summer Camp programme has appointed in total 3 Mandal and 3 Assistant Mandal Coordinators in the district who would be taking care of 3 Mandals each on an individual basis. As Pratham is entering the district of Medak for the first time, its Mandal Coordinators will be extensively supported by the Mandal Level Resource Persons of NGO Medvan in order to mobilize and sensitize both volunteers and community in understanding the significance of the Summer Camp programme and for subsequently generating better educational learning achievements by children in the district.

While executing the programme, a one day orientation session was conducted for Mandal Resource persons of Medvan NGO on 12 th May, 2008. It was planned that this orientation would be followed by mandal level training's for volunteers from 23 rd May, 2008 to 30 th May, 2008 in order to give them a better understanding about the processes and impact aimed at through the Summer Camp programme of Pratham. The first of these trainings was conducted on 24 th May, 2008 for 18 volunteers in the office of NGO READS in Toopran Mandal of Medak district. The volunteers participating in the training were mobilized through the collective effort of Pratham and the Mandal Coordinator for Toopran, Mr Janardhan Reddy from NGO READS. The training was conducted by a 3 member Pratham Resource Persons team from Hyderabad that comprised of Saillahben, Mahalaxmi and Kalyani. In a day long training module, the Pratham Resource Persons trained the volunteers on various aspects of Summer Camp programme like programme objectives, testing tools explanation, division of children in groups according to their learning levels, activity-based learning methodology for languages and mathematics, community mobilization techniques, teacher learning material usage etc. The training session concluded with a review session for the entire day's training during which queries of volunteers on various aspect of Summer Camp were patiently addressed by the Resource Group of Pratham. After the Review session, TLM and travel plus food allowance was distributed to the volunteers. The one day training ended on an enthusiastic note with songs like "Bhalu ko hum Ginti Sikhayanga" echoing in the minds of all participants. Based on the blue print of this training, similar training sessions were conducted in 16 Mandals of Medak district which saw the participation of 640 volunteers who were also provided with 640 sets of TLM kits.

Post such trainings like the one in Toopran, classes within Summer Camp programme will be held on 3 hours basis on weekdays and would take the shape of community campaigns during weekends to ensure the ownership of the programme by community members in 18 Mandals of Medak district. Also a base line test at the beginning of the Summer Camp and final test at the end of the one month programme will be conducted for each learner to quantifiably assess the impact of the programme on each participant. Thus, while conceptually understanding Pratham's Summer Camp programme it becomes significant to notice the fact that it does not work on a narrow project base strategy but emerges as an educational movement through its extensive networking with UNICEF and local NGOs like Medvan in order to find permanent and long-term solutions to the problem of low learning levels of children in the district of Medak.
