|
Children in the L2R from the previous cycles were promoted to R2L1 as per need and achievement. Around 32 L2R were promoted to R2L1 under first cycle and 20 in the second cycle. From these 32 R2L1, 14 have been promoted to R2L2 in February 2008. These classes were held up to April 2008. |

Book Exhibition
Enable children read more books and develop a reading habit.
This exhibition was conducted at 7 centers in Vizag city direct programme bastis simultaneously for three days on November 14 th (Childrens'day) and from January 31 st to Febuary 3 rd 2008.
Books were displayed and competitions were conducted in fundamental maths, English vocabulary, telugu reading and GK for children. Prizes were distributed to best performing volunteers.
Story writing contest were held, around 1000 children participated. The best 120 stories have been compiled |
| In-School Programme |
In 1 st Week of October, the community volunteer teachers were trained in L2R training methodology. Post the training the volunteers conducted a Base Line test in all 70 schools. Subsequently from last week of October to January last week, one cycle of L2R classes were held in the schools where each class comprised 20-25 students. From February, 2008 onwards, second cycle of L2R classes were started in the 70 schools of Vizag.
This cycle of In-School programme came to a temporary end in the month of March owing to the final examinations being held in the schools. But March 2008, also saw the conduction of Vidya Mela in Pratham from 25 th to 28 th of March, 2008 that was aired on Radio Mirchi.

Vidya Mela
The Vidya Mela conducted in Pratham from 25 th to 28 th of March, 2008 saw the participation of key Government officials like SSA AMO Mr Jairam, District Inspector of Schools Mr C.H. Sreenivas, School's Inspector Mrs Vimala Kumari and MEO Mr Panindra. The Mela also saw the participation of 20 members comprising of school Headmasters and Mandal Resource persons. The Mela aired live for three consecutive days on Radio Mirchi was enthusiastically participated in by over 3000 children, In-School programme volunteers, Team Monitors and parents of the children from the community. |
Impact on reading competency of children
In 70 schools of Vizag, the percentage of non-readers as calculated through the base line and final tests decreased from being 87.60% to 52% in the students that participated in the first cycle of L2R classes help from October, 2007 to January 2008. Also the number of readers in these 70 schools increased from being merely 12.40% to 48% as calculated through the base line and final tests. |

Vidya Mela

The Mela also saw the participation of 20 members comprising of school Headmasters and Mandal Resource persons. The Mela aired live on Radio Mirchi for three consecutive days was enthusiastically participated by over 4000 children, In-School programme volunteers, Team Monitors and parents of the children from the community. The Mela was held in the premises of a Government school in Vizag.
Activities and games were conducted for children from 6-14 years. Various stalls were arranged based on study subjects like Math, Science, English, Social, Telugu, GK, and display of Library books. Activities included Map pointing, puzzle solving etc. Children were encouraged to participate in cultural activities like skits and dances.
The Mela was given wide publicity through distribution of pamphlets to all the schools and communities. Radio Mirchi had also publicized the same through radio advertisements. |
| Summer camp |
The District Government of Vizag has partnered with Pratham to conduct the Summer camp in urban and rural vizag. In the Vizag city 41 schools will benefit from the summer camp. Low performing schools(low learning levels) have been targeted.
The Summer camp will run from 6 th may 2008 to 10 june 2008. Training and monitoring is being done by Sarva Sikshaa Abyan(Rajiv Vidya Mission) at Visakhapatnam for 3 days. Sixty volunteers/teachers from Pratham attended the training and are participating in the summer camp. External evaluation of the same shall be conducted by Andhra University- Social Work department. The reports will be shared once available. |
